Connie Krohn was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the winter of 1973. She had always enjoyed drawing, and being a typical horse crazy girl, most of those drawings depicted this subject. There was always very careful attention to detail, no doubt wishing one day those drawings would come to life! In the early 1980's, Connie's parents decided to purchase a Keeshond as a pet, and as fate would have it, they found Jean Grassick (Winbakees Keeshonden) to get their dog from. Jean was an artist as well as a show dog breeder, and a years-long friendship ensued between herself and Connie. Jean became something of a mentor to Connie, teaching her about dogs in general, the business and pleasure of art, and all about Dog Shows! The two of them were seen at many dog shows over the next several years, holding a booth to sell their wares and showing various dogs. In fact, Jean was instrumental in the acquisition of Connie's first dog of her own - a Cairn Terrier by the name of Kinncayre's Keystone Kop. Connie would proceed over the years to put many titles on her little red dog and, although her heart remained with horses and larger dogs (Dobermans in particular), she learned the joys that little lap dogs could bring! Time passed, (as time does) and Jean and Connie grew apart, each pursuing different avenues but both still staying within the same realm of show dogs.
For a while, there was still a booth to attend to at the shows, but as more people began to notice the winning Connie could do in the ring with the dogs, she started to be hired for handling jobs. And of course, starting with Terriers, Connie was soon recognized for her ability to "roll a coat", something not easily learned in the art of hand-stripping! In looking for her next dog, Connie narrowed the field down to Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, Norwich Terriers, or Miniature Schnauzers. After much research and deliberation, she chose the Miniature Schnauzer for their athleticism, the artfulness of their presentation, and - well, shaved down, they look a bit like miniature Dobermans! For her first Mini, she went to Catherine McMillan (another accomplished artist!) of Minuteman Mini Schnauzer fame, and started another relationship/mentorship with her. Connie has now owned 4 Minis, each one either siring or grandsiring the next one. It was not long before time for the booth at the shows was lost. Connie no longer makes and carries "stock" to sell, rather all her work is now commissioned in advance. All the photos on the pages you will see in this website are of paintings or figurines that already have homes. All of Connie's work is "original", which means there are no prints to buy, there are no duplicates of anything you see here. All of it is one of a kind!!!
We hope that you enjoy looking through these pages. If you have any questions for Connie, please do not hesitate to email her. You can use the email button found at the top of this and every page. She will get back to you as soon as she can, but also understand that she may be away at another Dog Show! Connie feels that this constant exposure to dog shows as well as the opportunity given to her by her handling clients to work with different breeds, helps her to better understand the subtle differences between the breeds, as well as the trends that each breed goes through as years pass. In short - it helps her to develop an "eye for a dog". This translates into a better understanding of breed type, and enables Connie to more accurately depict the various breeds clients want her to paint or sculpt. Connie's specialty is working from photos that clients provide, capturing the "essence" of that particular animal. Connie also has done work for a great many dog clubs holding Specialty Shows, providing memorable prizes for the exhibitors. Her work is highly cherished by many. Thank you, once again, for visiting ConnieKrohn.com!
