Once Connie is satisfied with the shape of the sculpture, she will carefully add the texture, carving the hair in and striving for a true life-like appearance.  Only once she is certain that no more can be done does she allow the clay piece to sit out for several days to completely dry out and harden.  The clay that Connie works with does NOT need firing, so this is the final step before she starts to paint!
Painting is done with acrylics, and the piece is finished with a spray varnish, to protect it and give the color a little more depth and shine.
Cost for the sculptures varies, depending on the finished size and how many subjects are involved.  It is best to email Connie using the button at the top of this page to inquire about pricing, and if she can do your breed in this medium.   Generally, a 4 inch tall sculpture will cost $150.00
The sculpture is begun with a large lump of potter's clay, rolled it into a ball to soften it up and get a feel for just how much clay is needed for the sculpture.  Connie then flattens the ball and cuts a rough two dimensional shape of the dog out of the clay.  Now the real work begins!
Starting from the nose, Connie starts to add dimension to the sculpture, "fleshing it out", smoothing with her fingers and carving with dental tools.  Sometimes this process can take several days, as she works the clay, lets it dry a bit more, then goes back to it and makes small changes.  Even in this medium, her attention to detail is second to none!
